Abbeville Sundown Theater A Success!

Posted on Sep 9, 2009

This Summer, under the direction of Mayor Ryan Blalock, the City of Abbeville, in coordination with the Abbeville Recreation Department, set out to provide some Friday night fun for the residents of Abbeville and Henry County by showing movies at Abbeville City Park for four consecutive weeks in July.

Beginning in early July, people gathered in either Abbeville City Park on one of the baseball fields or the Abbeville Community Center (if it was raining) to watch movies. For the first week, the movie Fireproof was shown. This movie was a recent production of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia; their third film. The featured movie was preceded by a demonstration for children by the Abbeville Fire Department about fire safety. Children were also able to have access to the one of the Fire Department’s trucks, which provided a great deal of fun for all the children present.

For the second week, the movie October Sky was selected to be shown. This movie was a biographical film about one of the scientists who ended up residing in and designing rockets in North Alabama. Children were invited to build their own rockets as well as see a demonstration of larger rockets provided by a local organization.

Over the next two weeks the movies Daddy Day Care and Hotel For Dogs were shown.

Overall, the event was successful in building the community and giving people a unique opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather (most nights) provided by an Abbeville summer evening.

Hopefully, the City of Abbeville will continue to offer the Sundown Theater as weather, time and finances permit.
